PowerPC still powers on
Submitted by john on Mon, 2011-07-18 02:08And I thought this thing was fast? Fired up the iBook G4 and am currently composing on it. At 1.2 Ghz 1.25 GB RAM it isn't top of the line anymore. But it does update to OSX 10.5.8. I forget how long this will get security updates. The web experience will probably degrade first because already I need to go back to Firefox 3.6. Flash, ha! Flash sucks CPU even on current generation. Maybe an early 10 version, but Adobe is dropping it. Chrome never even had a ppc version. Maybe Camino will be updated longer.

IPv6
Submitted by john on Wed, 2011-01-19 19:28More and more sites trying IPv6, awesome. I don't on a day to day basis though. My network has been capable for doing so for a long time but I have no native support from the ISP. Oh well.

Surfboard sinks temporarily
Submitted by john on Sun, 2011-01-09 14:59Huh. For some reason my old Surfboard connected to Charter decided to do this for a while:

Through the white and drifting snow
Submitted by john on Tue, 2010-12-21 14:40Apparently London Heatherow is running with one runway... yikes. I like snow, but this may have thrown a snag in some travel plans.

Ten
Submitted by john on Sun, 2010-10-10 14:12Today is 2010/10/10. At 10:10 today that's a lot of tens.
Also as I was informed 101010 is 42 in binary. Which is kinda cool.
And that Ubuntu releases today. Good for them, I may even try it out.
As a side note I submit that the practice in the USA of MM/DD/YY date formats is rather silly. It doesn't even collate easily.

No e-waste
Submitted by john on Mon, 2010-08-30 13:08Hooray. No longer legal to chuck electronics in the trash in WI. We need to save resources and not dump toxic pollutants everywhere. Fortunately Best Buy in particular will take some items off my hands for free. I tend to go there anyway. The bins in front that take small items like ink cartridges and cell phones are intriguing.

4kVA
Submitted by john on Thu, 2010-08-19 12:40Currently I have 4kVA of battery backup across 3 units. It's pretty impressive actually but the displays say run time is about 15 minutes. That is under pretty heavy load though so even if I'm playing a game it will last a while. The lights will go out except the glow from the monitor.
There is a warning on them that the output is not sinusoidal although it hasn't really seemed to matter.

It's alive!
Submitted by john on Wed, 2010-08-18 00:07Back online. The old server in the ancient HP Vectra is offline, and I can't really maintain it from hundreds of miles away. But! I got a VPS, from Linode. Do it yourself, here's the root prompt? Yes please. Dumped my mysql backup on it, drupal6 CentOS package, and restored the theme. Longest part was actually making the URLs look pretty again.

Fast forward
Submitted by john on Fri, 2009-12-25 00:11Wow it's been a long time since my last update. Suffice it to say that I'm now in Madison. Well, not in Madison now, home for the holidays. But my place is now in south central cheesehead land. I still like the Vikings though, and what do you know they might have a chance with Favre tossing the ball we'll see. I was much amused to see a store selling shirts in WI "Temporary Vikings Fan" with #4. Ha.

10 days?
Submitted by john on Thu, 2008-07-24 20:23Why does unsubscribing from some mailing lists and offers and crap take up to 10 days? Surely in this modern age it takes only a few moments to have the computer do it.
